Northcott Stonehenge

Margaret Margaret’s Storm at Sea is a 3-color, 5-fabric quilt in a horizontal setting. It measures 81 x 81 inches. I substituted the outside row of 6″ Square in a Square units for a 6″ Yin Yang block. They look like rolling waves in this 4-color block.

This design uses the Inklingo 9″ Storm at Sea Collection and the Inklingo Yin Yang Collection. I colored the blocks in EQ7 with fabrics from Artisan Spirit Shimmer collections and Stonehenge by Northcott.

I have two Margarets in my direct family lines that were immigrants to New York in the 1830s. [Andrew Jackson was president to give you a historical reference.] I thought a Storm at Sea quilt seemed appropriate for them. In my paternal grandmother’s line, Margaret [Hausauer] Buisch Bamberg arrived aboard the Charles Carroll in New York on 25 July 1833—the day after she turned 7 years old. Margaret is my 2x great grandmother. Her family is from Alsace France. In 1860 Margaret came down with smallpox which left her blind. She lived for more than 40 years as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother without her sight.

Three years after the Hausauers arrived in New York, the Williamson family—my paternal grandfather’s line—arrived aboard the North America on 6 July 1836. Margaret [Pollitt] Williamson [Isabella’s mama] is my 3x great grandmother. The Williamsons left Lancashire, England to settle in Rochester, New York. Margaret died in 1856 from apoplexy which is a broad medical term that, at that time, could have been meant a stroke, an aneurysm or even a heart attack. Margaret Williamson’s descendents are scattered all over the United States today.

Storm at Sea is one of those blocks where color placement and light/dark value placement make a huge impact on the overall look of the quilt. All that was changed in the colorway above is the color placement in the 3” Square in a Square blocks. In the original quilt, the blocks have white centers with dark green HST. In this design, the colors in that block have been reversed.

Leona Leona – Lady of the Lake is a 2-color, 2-fabric quilt in a horizontal setting. It measures 76 x 76 inches. This is an easy quilt with only 2 fabrics and 1 shape—Half Square Triangles!

This design uses the Inklingo HST 00B Collection. I colored the blocks in EQ7 with fabrics from Toscana and Stonehenge by Northcott.

Another quilt with no real ancestor story. Leona Maude George was a second cousin in my paternal grandmother’s mother’s line. [Got that?] Her parents were both Georges. I am sure there is a story there but I haven’t done any research on it since it is a collateral line. I’m focused on direct lines only until I get everything re-entered in my genealogy software. I just liked Leona’s name for this quilt out of all the female L names.

Isabella Isabella’s Star is a 2-color, 3-fabric quilt set on point. It measures approximately 83 x 83 inches. Feathered Stars are really quite easy when you follow the directions for sewing them that Linda has provided in the Inklingo Feathered Star Design Book.

This design uses the Inklingo 20″ Feathered Star Collection. I colored the blocks in EQ7 with fabrics from Stonehenge by Northcott.

Isabella was a popular name in my Williamson line. The first record I have for an Isabella is a baptism in 1832 in Lancashire, England. She was the second daughter and fourth child of Thomas and Margaret [Pollitt] Williamson. Sadly she died and was buried on 2 May 1833. Shortly after her parents emigrated from England to America in 1836, they had another daughter and named her Isabella. For a time in subsequent generations, there were one or two more daughters named Isabella in the Williamson families. It makes me wonder if I won’t find another Isabella back even farther in my Williamson or Pollitt lines.
