Margaret’s Storm at Sea
Margaret’s Storm at Sea is a 3-color, 5-fabric quilt in a horizontal setting. It measures 81 x 81 inches. I substituted the outside row of 6″ Square in a Square units for a 6″ Yin Yang block. They look like rolling waves in this 4-color block.
This design uses the Inklingo 9″ Storm at Sea Collection and the Inklingo Yin Yang Collection. I colored the blocks in EQ7 with fabrics from Artisan Spirit Shimmer collections and Stonehenge by Northcott.
I have two Margarets in my direct family lines that were immigrants to New York in the 1830s. [Andrew Jackson was president to give you a historical reference.] I thought a Storm at Sea quilt seemed appropriate for them. In my paternal grandmother’s line, Margaret [Hausauer] Buisch Bamberg arrived aboard the Charles Carroll in New York on 25 July 1833—the day after she turned 7 years old. Margaret is my 2x great grandmother. Her family is from Alsace France. In 1860 Margaret came down with smallpox which left her blind. She lived for more than 40 years as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother without her sight.
Three years after the Hausauers arrived in New York, the Williamson family—my paternal grandfather’s line—arrived aboard the North America on 6 July 1836. Margaret [Pollitt] Williamson [Isabella’s mama] is my 3x great grandmother. The Williamsons left Lancashire, England to settle in Rochester, New York. Margaret died in 1856 from apoplexy which is a broad medical term that, at that time, could have been meant a stroke, an aneurysm or even a heart attack. Margaret Williamson’s descendents are scattered all over the United States today.

Storm at Sea is one of those blocks where color placement and light/dark value placement make a huge impact on the overall look of the quilt. All that was changed in the colorway above is the color placement in the 3” Square in a Square blocks. In the original quilt, the blocks have white centers with dark green HST. In this design, the colors in that block have been reversed. ![]() ![]() |
